You do NOT have to have fought in a war to receive a War Pension. Any wound, injury or disease which is caused by or made worse by service in the Armed Forces can be considered for a War Pension. War Pensions or War Widows Pensions are not taxable and can be received in addition to National Insurance Benefits. The War Pensioners Welfare Office provides friendly, individual advice. They offer emergency help for friends & family of Servicemen in times of difficulty such as bereavement. Advice is given on war & disability pensions. On a more personal level they offer friendship for housebound, lonely & elderly people & home visits can be arranged. Young mothers may seek advice from the organisation as can wives of servicemen, (retired & serving). Office hours are Mon & Thur from 10am-1pm, ansaphone out of hours. They help to provide finance towards rest or convalescent homes, also have a list of approved hotels, for which they will give help towards holidays. Widows & Ex-Servicewomens Allowance Scheme provides over 1000 women with quarterly allowance. Flatlets Houses let at realistic rents to ex-servicewomen or widows of ex.servicemen. Also provide Mobility Scooters for disabled ladies.
